Climate Change in Paradise

A few years ago environmentalism received a chilly reception in Paradise, California. Now the town's political climate shows signs of warming up to the concept. The Paradise Town Council has signed on to the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. That may not seem like much, but it shows our intent to pursue new ways of living in Paradise that produce fewer global warming greenhouse gas emissions. I don't believe that means everyone will be hugging the trees; in fact, it could mean that we'll cut more down and install solar panels.

The Town of Paradise urges the federal and state governments to find ways to meet or exceed the emission standards proposed in the Kyoto Protocol. Since 2005 most countries, including China and Russia, have ratifed the agreement. Two notable exceptions are the United States and Australia.

Paradise's move toward environmentalism could make our lives better and save us money and resources. We're thinking globally and acting locally; okay, at least we've taken our first step in that direction. Now we can argue about solar panels.
